Google Latitude llega al iPhone… de un modo algo extraño
Los poseedores de un iPhone o un iPod Touch en los países anglosajones ya pueden utilizar Latitude, el servicio de Google que muestra sobre el mapa en qué lugar se encuentra el usuario y/o sus amigos que hayan aceptado compartir su ubicación con él. La función Latitude ya estaba incorporada en las aplicaciones nativas de Google Maps para los sistemas operativos BlackBerry, Symbian y Windows Mobile, pero hasta ahora no ha llegado al iPhone, y no lo ha hecho como aplicación descargable, sino como aplicación web.
Efectivamente, a diferencia de las demás plataformas, Latitude para el iPhone no se ha integrado en la aplicación de Google Maps, sino que utiliza las funciones de geolocalización del navegador Safari cuando se accede a la dirección http://google.com/latitude. Naturalmente, si el usuario desea tener un icono de acceso directo, puede crearlo de la manera habitual, pero es sorprendente que Google haya optado por este sistema en lugar de publicar una aplicación en la App Store.
En el blog de Google Mobile se indica que ha sido a petición de Apple, a fin de ‘evitar confusiones con Mapas para iPhone, que utiliza Google para mostrar los mapas’.
La consecuencia de este método es que los usuarios del iPhone no podrán dejar la aplicación abierta en segundo plano para que vaya actualizando su posición mientras hacen otras cosas, algo que sí pueden hacer los usuarios de otras plataformas.
Google ha indicado que irá ampliando el número de países en los que ofrece el servicio Latitude.
En este artículo se revisan otras aplicaciones de baliza de posición, como SpotMe para iPhone, My Location para BlackBerry y miniGPS y Nokia FriendView para Symbian.

Striking thoughts here. Are you certain this is the correct way to look at it though? My experience is that we should pretty much live and let live because what one person examines as just — another person simply doesn’t. Individuals are going to do what they want to do. In the end, they always do. The best we can yearn for is to indicate a few things here and there that hopefully, allows them to make just a little better informed decision. Otherwise, great post.
